Save the Date!

Hope everyone has had a good summer and found some opportunities to explore (either physically or via books) the great history of our area.

Our AGM has been confirmed for Saturday, October 19th, 1:30 p.m. at the Midway Seniors Centre. This facility is the former Mining Recorder's Office for the area! Exact location etc. will be coming in the official AGM notice at the end of the month but in the meantime, SAVE THE DATE! We're working on a guest speaker and will even have door prizes!

It is absolutely imperative that we have a good attendance at the AGM and that we are able to fill the upcoming vacancies on the Board of Directors. Specifically, we MUST have a President, Secretary and Treasurer. We cannot continue without these positions being filled and the members currently in these roles are unable to take on another term.

Any organization is only as strong as its membership, and a low turnout at an AGM can be an indication that a society's days are numbered. So please, plan on attending and encourage your friends, family, neighbours or other interested parties to do the same.

See you there!

BHS July Member Newsletter

BOUNDARY HISTORICAL SOCIETY
MEMBER NEWSLETTER
July 2013

Dear Members of the Boundary Historical Society, welcome to our July BHS member newsletter!

First of all, I want to remind you all that our AGM will be coming up in late September or early October (date will be decided at our Board meeting in early August.) We’re hoping to hold it in Midway this year, but are still working on a suitable venue.

Any organization is only as strong as its membership, and low turnout at an AGM can be an indication that a society’s days are numbered. So please, we’ll let you know the date as soon as it’s decided and we’re asking you to plan on attending and encourage your friends, neighbours or other interested parties to do the same. We’re working on finding a guest speaker and we might even have door prizes!

Our picnic last month was enjoyed by all who attended. Approximately 30 members were in attendance, and Rick, of Owl Mountain Ranch, has an incredible number of artifacts there for viewing and sharing information on. We’re hoping next year’s picnic can serve to help increase the involvement of younger members of our communities so are considering including things such as a children’s period costume contest. If you have ideas to help our picnic appeal to younger families or visitors to our area, please let a member of the board know.

Our publications committee is continuing to work hard on both our next report and our upcoming post card book. In the meantime, we’re working at making sure our books are available to those who need them. We’ll be selling books (and memberships – it’s not too early to renew!) at the Christina Lake Homecoming, the Grand Forks Fall Fair and the Rock Creek Fall Fair. We’ve made arrangements to donate full sets of our reports to the history classes of both secondary schools and are also ensuring that all 3 public libraries in our area have complete reference and circulating copies of all reports.

Still on the subject of our reports – we’ve set a special price for people buying a complete set of reports and, even more importantly to you – our members – we’ve set a new policy that any BHS members purchasing reports directly from us can purchase at the wholesale price!

Remember -  we need new faces for our board as of our AGM in the autumn. If you’re interested in a specific position, feel free to contact the person currently in that position (or any other board member) for information about what’s involved.

Our next Board meeting is scheduled for early August, so the next newsletter should be posted on our blog, and an email notification sent shortly thereafter.  In the meantime, history unshared is history lost so spread the word and help your society carry on!

BHS Newsletter - April 2013

Dear Members of the Boundary Historical Society, welcome to our April BHS member newsletter!
First, mark your calendar, our annual picnic will be held at Owl Mountain Ranch (between Grand Forks & Christina Lake) on Saturday, June 15th. Details will be coming out towards the end of May but plan on bringing your lunch, your lawn chair, your family and/or friends and a prayer for sunshine!

Our publications committee is continuing to work hard on both our next report and our upcoming post card book. Articles are slow to come in though. While the committee can edit and compile articles, they can’t write them all. If you have knowledge of Boundary history, or life in the Boundary in earlier years, please consider putting them in print for sharing. History unshared is history unknown. Articles can be dropped off at the Archives (in the basement of City Hall), mailed to us at the address below or handed in through any board member.

Information from the Fall Fair board (being held August 23 – 25th) is that this year’s theme will be “Going Back to the Past” – we are hoping to have a table again this year for selling memberships and books.

Remember -  we need new faces for our board as of our AGM in the autumn. If you’re interested in a specific position, feel free to contact the person currently in that position (or any other board member) for information about what’s involved.

Our next Board meeting is scheduled for late May, so the next newsletter should be posted on our blog, and an email notification sent, 2 – 3 weeks later.  In the meantime, get those pens or keyboards working!

Newsletter - March 2013

Welcome to the 1st BHS member newsletter!

First of all, for those who weren’t able to attend our luncheon and Special General Meeting at the end of January – we were able to elect a complete Board of Directors.  We took names of people interested in serving on the board as area reps/directors and they were confirmed at our first board meeting. The Board of Directors for the balance of the current year is:
President:    Les Johnson – 250-442-0706
Vice-president: Delphine Novak – 250-444-2500
Secretary:   Deb Billwiller – 250-442-1242
Treasurer:   John Billwiller – 250-442-2943
Directors:   Peter Kootchin – 250-442-8517
                   Peter Koftinoff – 250-442-8580
                   Colleen Salikin – 250-442-5217
                   Sue Adrain – 250-447-6477
                   Al Donnelly – 250-445-6399
                   Chris Stevenson – 250-528-6346

It must be noted that, at our next AGM, we will be in need of a new President, Secretary and Treasurer.

Brian Grey is continuing on as our Researcher.

Other highlights of our recent Board meeting:
We now have Director’s Liability Insurance, as well as event insurance to cover the society during our picnic, luncheon etc.

We currently have 50 paid members and 2 honorary members. For any who aren’t aware, our honorary members are Alice Glanville and Dorothy Zoellner.

We expect to have a table at the Christina Lake Welcome Centre during Christina Lake Homecoming Weekend. We’ll be selling reports and memberships as well as answering questions.

We are collecting articles for our 16th report. If anyone has an article they would like us to consider, they can drop it off at the Archives, in the basement of Grand Forks City Hall or through any member of the Board. We have put together a Publishing Committee, currently consisting of: Sue Adrain, Peter Kootchin, Peter Koftinoff, Chris Stevenson, Al Donnelly & Les Johnson. The Committee is also working on a coffee table type book of post cards.

Les is recording (with permission from the speakers) the Living Books presentations at Gallery 2 and we’re exploring the idea of creating and selling DVDs of those recordings. The Board is also looking into making post cards for selling and the making and selling of mugs etc. with historic photos, through Value Drug Mart.

There was discussion around book distribution, including how prices were decided on, where books are sold and where our stock and archive copies are kept. We are looking into donating sets of reports to local high school history classes and ensuring that all local public libraries have as complete a collection as possible.

The Board has begun early discussions on this year’s picnic and are also looking into participating with Greenwood and Area E of the RDKB in their project of utilizing ground penetrating radar at various gravesites and then building a database of them.

A very productive 2 ½ hour meeting!

Our next Board meeting is scheduled for early April, so the next newsletter should be posted online, and an email notification sent to our members, 2 – 3 weeks later.
